For those of you wanting to know #whatsthatbug, here’s some info about the Ironclad Beetle!
This species is called the Diabolical Ironclad Beetle, or Phloeodes diabolicus. The reason it’s diabolical is currently unknown (to me). It is found all around Southern California, often wandering around bark or shrubbery, which it is thought to feed on. There are approximately 14 other species of the Ironclad beetle. All of these species have extremely hard exoskeletons; too hard to even push a pin through. When disturbed or threatened, this beetle draws in its limbs and stays still to feign death.
